Halpern's paintings are a response to issues in her own life or to contemporary events.  She does not make thumbnail sketches or plan the work before she paints.  Instead, she begins to paint and then, in order to disorient the process and see the piece through fresh eyes, she turns the pieces upside-down.  Her creative process is directed but improvisational, incorporating the use of intentional and accidental mark making.  What continually surfaces are murky, dream-like scenes evoking a disjointed sense of an unpredictable world.  Many pieces are large and meant to engage the viewer in both her physical and psychological worlds.

Ultimately,  she aspires to create work that communicates the complex matrix of universally shared emotions yet still connects viewers with their own personal meanings.
